Why Communication Matters in Massage Therapy | Downtown Edmonton Massage Therapist

Massage therapy is a collaborative effort between the massage therapist and the client. While we are the experts in massage therapy, you are the expert on your own body. Open communication before, during, and after your treatment helps us establish clear boundaries, provide more effective care, and create a treatment plan that supports longer-lasting results.

Whether you're coming in for chronic pain, injury recovery, or general wellness, good communication is one of the most important tools that we have to make your massage treatment as effective as possible.

Before Your Massage Treatment

Before every massage treatment, we'll spend time discussing your areas of concern so that we can tailor the session specifically to your needs. Sharing information about your symptoms, what brings relief, what seems to make the discomfort worse, when it started, how long it has been present, and what you think may have caused it are all valuable pieces of information.

This conversation helps guide not only the treatment itself but, more importantly, the assessment process. A thorough assessment allows us to identify potential contributing factors to your discomfort rather than simply treating the area where you feel pain. In many cases, the location of your symptoms isn't necessarily where the underlying issue is originating.

The more information that you provide, the better we can understand the bigger picture and develop a treatment plan that's specific to you.

During Your Massage Treatment

Your communication during your massage is just as important.

One of the most valuable things you can do is let your therapist know if the pressure is too much or too little. There's a common misconception that massage therapy has to be painful to be effective. In my experience, that simply isn't true.

Working within your comfort level while using the appropriate techniques and treatment approach is often much more effective than pushing beyond your pain tolerance. If the pressure is too intense, your muscles naturally guard and tense up, which works against the tissue changes that we're trying to achieve.

Throughout your treatment, I'll also check in with you regularly. These check-ins allow me to monitor your comfort level and reassess how your body is responding to the treatment. For example, we may compare your range of motion or discomfort before and after treating a specific muscle to see whether we're making meaningful progress during the session.

Your feedback helps me adjust the treatment in real time, ensuring that every session is as effective as possible.

After Your Massage Treatment

The conversation doesn't end once you get off the table.

After your treatment, we'll take a few minutes to discuss how you're feeling, whether any areas that we addressed feel sore, and whether you've noticed any immediate changes in your symptoms. We'll also repeat any relevant assessment from the beginning of the appointment to see if we've achieved the improvements we were aiming for.

I always encourage honest feedback. If you're not feeling the results you were hoping for, you won't hurt my feelings by telling me. In fact, that information is incredibly valuable. It simply tells us that we may need to adjust our treatment plan, try a different approach, or focus on different contributing factors during your next visit.

You'll also leave with home care recommendations based on what I observed during your appointment. Depending on your needs, this may include mobility exercises, stretching, strengthening exercises, or self-release techniques to help maintain your progress between treatments. Massage therapy is most effective when treatment in the clinic is combined with consistent home care.

Communication Creates Better Results

At the end of the day, massage therapy works best when it's a partnership. The more openly that you communicate with your therapist, the clearer picture we have of what's going on and the better we can support you throughout your recovery or wellness journey.

It's important to find a massage therapist that you trust—someone you feel comfortable sharing feedback with, asking questions, and communicating openly throughout your care.
