If you have never had a massage before, the idea of it might be daunting. Many people wait until it is the very last resort to seek help for their pain because they're intimidated by the idea of massage therapy. I think this comes down to a lack of knowledge around the discipline, and I hope that today, by sharing the details of a standard massage treatment, I can help someone who has previously felt intimidated, feel more comfortable booking in to help manage their pain, improve their mobility, or prevent dysfunction.
Your Initial Assessment
Every first-time massage therapy treatment starts with a detailed patient history where we go over your past medical history, medications, concerns for treatment, and any other relevant information. This is an important part of ensuring your treatment is safe, effective, and tailored to your individual needs.
I then go through the relevant range of motion and screening tests to ensure safe treatment prior to starting and to get a baseline, allowing us to reassess any changes post-treatment. This helps me better understand what might be contributing to your pain, muscle tension, or restricted movement.
Following the assessment, I talk you through how I plan to structure the treatment, what we will be treating, the tools that I may use to create the most effective treatment possible, and how I want you positioned on the table, leaving no room for confusion and unnecessary stress.
What Happens During Your Massage?
Throughout the treatment, I will stay diligent in communicating about pressure, discomfort, and positioning. I will also communicate very clearly when I reposition you, adjust draping, or passively move your limbs. At the end of the day, you are the one in control during your treatment, and I will listen to any of your boundaries and concerns wholeheartedly.
Your massage treatment should never feel like something you have to tolerate. If the pressure is too much, something feels uncomfortable, or you simply need a change in positioning, you can let me know at any time. We can adjust the treatment to suit your comfort level.
Depending on your needs, massage therapy may involve a variety of techniques to address muscle tension, discomfort, and movement restrictions. Every treatment is different because every person who walks through the door is different and your massage should reflect that.
Some people enjoy chatting during their treatment, while others would prefer to enjoy the silence and focus on their breathing. Either is completely fine with me, and I will check in with you about the kind of treatment experience you would like each time you come to see me.
What Happens After Your Massage?
Following the treatment, I will discuss any problematic areas that I noticed, complete the necessary reassessments, recommend home care in a detailed manner, and answer any questions that you may have.
Home care recommendations may include stretches, strength exercises, or other strategies to help you manage your symptoms between appointments. Sometimes, I will even record videos of you or me completing the exercise so you can refer back to them at home and feel confident performing them independently.
We will also discuss any changes we noticed during the treatment and whether further massage therapy sessions may be beneficial for your goals. I work with you to find a frequency for treatment that feels manageable and effective.
Is Massage Therapy Right for You?
Massage therapy is an incredibly useful tool that I believe flies under the radar because many people are scared to book that first treatment. Whether you are dealing with persistent muscle tension, everyday aches and pains, restricted mobility, or simply looking for support with general well-being and preventative treatment, massage therapy may be a helpful addition to your self-care routine.
You do not need to wait until your pain becomes unbearable to book an appointment, and you do not need to know exactly what is wrong before coming in. Part of my job is to assess your concerns, help you better understand what may be contributing to your symptoms, and develop a treatment plan that reflects your needs.
If you are a first-time massage client, I would like to provide a safe, effective, and comforting treatment that creates a positive experience with massage therapy and keeps you coming back for years to come!
If you have been putting off your first massage because you are unsure what to expect, I hope this gives you a better idea of what your appointment will look like!
