Success Habits Of A Local Businesswoman

Thriving as a Small Business Owner: Habits for Success By Miranda Horvath, Strive Holistic founder, owner and full time registered massage therapist in downtown Edmonton.

Anyone who knows me, knows that I consistently strive to be the best version of myself, and live my life with a driven purpose that keeps me feeling enthusiastic, positive and determined each day. Being a successful small business owner, especially as a local registered massage therapist in downtown Edmonton and local businesswoman, comes with its own unique set of challenges and opportunities. It requires dedication, perseverance, and a well-crafted set of habits that can help you navigate the complex journey of entrepreneurship. People ask me what I do to achieve what I have so far; so in this blog, we will explore some essential habits that can significantly contribute to your success as a small business owner.

Consistent Wake-Up Time:

Rising at the same time every day can help establish a sense of routine and discipline. This habit ensures that you start each day with a clear mind and the right attitude to tackle the challenges that lie ahead. Consistency in your daily schedule can lead to increased productivity and better time management. I know that my brain juices are flowing best after a morning work out, and between about 11 AM to 4PM each day, so I try my best to create new content or work on brainstorming in this window.

Healthy Eating and Regular Workouts:

As a small business owner, your well-being is paramount. Eating healthily and exercising regularly can boost your energy levels, enhance your focus, and increase your overall resilience. A balanced diet and physical fitness routine can help you stay physically and mentally fit for the demands of your business.

Finding a Mentor:

A mentor who is several steps ahead of you in your field can provide invaluable guidance and advice. Learning from someone with more experience can save you time and help you avoid common pitfalls. Their wisdom can be instrumental in your growth as a small business owner.

Humility and Self-Awareness:

Acknowledging that you will always have room for growth and improvement is essential. Avoid overconfidence and stay humble in your approach. Accept that learning curves are part of the journey and be patient with yourself as you face challenges.

But Also… Major Confidence:

A dichotomy to humility but equally as important and a delicate balance between humility and confidence. I have read research articles that have confirmed, and in my personal experience also, I find that woman statistically have less confidence than men. The business world is no exception, and we deserve to own our confidence and even flaunt it. You will have people that try to tell you why you don’t deserve to be confident in life, and express worry for you based on their own unprocessed personal limiting beliefs - but I find daily affirmations, energy release rituals, therapy, looking back at my successes throughout my life and other ways to reinforce for myself, that yes I deserve all this confidence and more. You deserve it!

Running Your Business In Accordance To Your Values:

Only you can decide what your dharma is, and I would rather fail doing what I thought was best than succeeding in a way that was following someone else’s path and ideas. The Strive Holistic values are trust and authenticity; this means I run my business in a way that shows how paramount it is for patients and employees to trust that I am what I say I am, and that I am always living and running things in a way that’s true to me.

Honest Self-Assessment:

Being honest with yourself about what truly matters is crucial. Prioritizing tasks that are genuinely important, rather than getting sidetracked by less urgent matters, can help you maintain your focus and productivity. Effective time management is a key skill for small business success.

Practicing Surrender and Detachment:

In a philosophical context, "surrender" refers to letting go of the need to control every aspect of your business. It means accepting that there are circumstances beyond your control and being open to adapt and evolve. "Detachment" is the art of not becoming too emotionally invested in the outcomes, which can help reduce stress and anxiety.

As a local businessperson, you have the potential to thrive and make a lasting impact on your community. Cultivating the habits mentioned above can significantly contribute to your success. I love discussing these principles with my clients in my clinic, and I also offer small business coaching to help entrepreneurs like you succeed. Daily To-Do Lists To Keep Order In Your Day:

Creating a to-do list each day allows you to prioritize your tasks and stay organized. The satisfaction of checking off completed items provides you with that sweet, sweet boost of dopamine, reinforcing your sense of accomplishment. This habit keeps you on track and ensures that you make steady progress towards your goals. I love to write down my tasks personally, as it feels more visceral and satisfying when you get to check them off. I stay away from using my phone as a checklist because it’s easy to get distracted by other apps on your phone.

Surrounding Yourself with Like-Minded Professionals:

Surrounding yourself with other entrepreneurs and professionals who share your drive and passion can be a source of motivation, inspiration, and valuable networking opportunities. Collaboration and shared experiences can provide a support system that helps you navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship. Why fight an uphill battle by surrounding yourself with people that don’t support or understand your vision?

Practicing What You Preach To Your Patients In Relation To Receiving Bodywork:

It doesn’t feel right for me to ask patients to rebook a massage therapy treatment every 2, 3 or 4 weeks, or whenever I feel is best for them according to our treatment plan, if I don’t take care of myself the same way. I adhere to a consistent schedule of receiving acupuncture or massage treatments (this is what works best for my body, not what’s “correct”) every 2-4 weeks. I pre-book my treatments and don’t cancel them even if I’m feeling alright; it’s the consistent care for your body that keeps you in top fighting shape. I don’t want to wait until I’m distracted with pain to book my treatment, or it might severely affect the tasks I need to complete for that day. Regular treatments mitigates this risk.

Financial Acumen & Discipline:

Managing your finances wisely is a fundamental aspect of small business ownership. Regularly tracking your finances and being honest about your spending habits is essential. Avoid unnecessary expenditures, try to remain as debt free and financially lean as you possibly can and reinvest in your business when needed to foster sustainable growth.

Continuous Learning:

Investing in your education and growth is an ongoing process. Reading books and listening to podcasts regularly can keep you updated with the latest trends and strategies in your industry. Being a lifelong learner is a key element of staying competitive and innovative. Some notable investments into my growth over the last couple years have been my Ayahuasca retreat this summer, reading a mixture of professional development and fiction novels every week, listening to my favourite podcasts (The Huberman Lab and Lex Fridman are my main ones right now), and investing into additional modalities like Cupping, Intra Oral Therapy, Graston Therapy & Thai Massage.
